通过官方新闻稿可以发现，“中国特色大国外交”的英文表述是：major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics(参见国务院新闻办英文网)
值得注意的是，“大国外交”四个字的官方英译是“major country diplomacy”，而很多国外媒体喜欢写作“great power diplomacy”。二者有何区别?
用“major country”翻译“大国”二字，听上去更中性，没有侵略性，而“great power”听上去则更强势，与中国“不称霸、不扩张”的外交政策不符。因此，中国官方采用的译法是“major country”而不是“great power”，这是用词的微妙之处。
具体到“中美关系”，我们常说“构建中美新型大国关系”，英文是：Builda New Model/Type of China-US Major-Country Relationship。
