阿瑟·柯南·道尔(Arthur Conan Doyle，1859年5月- 1930年7月)，英国杰出的侦探小说家，剧作家，被誉为英国的“侦探小说之父”。他成功地塑造了侦探人物—夏洛克·福尔摩斯，是侦探小说历史上最重要的作家之一。

1859年5月22日，柯南·道尔出生于爱尔兰的一个天主教教徒之家。但他的父亲长期酗酒，家庭生活十分困窘，在叔叔的帮助下，他得以离开苏格兰，前往英格兰的一家教会学校读书。1876年，柯南·道尔进入爱丁堡大学医学院学习，在学医的同时，他也写一些短篇小说。他的医药学知识对创作侦探小说起到了很大的帮助。1886年，几经波折，柯南·道尔的第一部小说《血字的研究》终于得以出版，而这也是福尔摩斯和华生医生首次出场。据他本人承认，福尔摩斯的形象来源于他的大学老师。

随着福尔摩斯系列小说的推出，柯南·道尔的名气越来越大，但他却认为福尔摩斯占据了他的太多时间。为了有更多时间进行自己感兴趣的创作，终于在1893年《最后一案》中，他让福尔摩斯和他的死敌莫里亚蒂一起葬身瀑布。

这一结果让福尔摩斯的粉丝们觉难以置信，甚至有人大骂柯南·道尔。终于，1903年，在出版商可观的稿费和读者的强烈要求下，他发表了《空屋》，使福尔摩斯死里逃生。
